Maximum Legal Weight Allowed:

A permit is required if vehicle weights exceed the following:

    • Single axle: 20,000 pounds
    • Tandem axle: 34,000 pounds
    • Any one wheel or wheels supporting one end of an axle: 11,000 pounds
    • Truck tractor steering axle: 13,000 pounds
    • Gross vehicle weight: 80,000 pounds

    Wisconsin Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permits:

      • 72-hour trip permits authorize one round trip into and out of Wisconsin for unregistered vehicles not enrolled in IRP or IFTA.
      • Required for vehicles registered in Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota beyond reciprocity zones.
      • Fee: $15 for temporary registration, $15 for fuel tax, or $30 for both.

    Wisconsin Annual Permits:

      • Allows for unlimited trips. 
      • Available for a duration of 3 to 12 months.

      Oversize Only Permits:

        • These are priced based on length or width/height/length combinations.
        • Prices range from $60 for a 12-month length-only permit to $30 for a 3-month permit.
        • Width and/or height/length combinations start at $90 for a 12-month permit and reduce down to $37.50 for a 3-month permit.

      Overweight or Overweight and Oversize Permits:

        • The fees depend on the load’s weight and the duration of the permit (from 12 months to 3 months).
        • For example:
          • Up to 90,000 lbs costs $200 for 12 months and $65 for 3 months.
          • For loads up to 170,000 lbs, the fees are $1,050 for 12 months and $277.50 for 3 months.

      Single Trip Permit Types:

      Permit Types:

        1. Single Trip OS/OW Permit (SS) – For oversize/overweight vehicles.
        2. Sealed Load in International Trade (CS) – For loads involved in international trade.
        3. Radiological Materials – Highway Reportable Permit (HRCQ) – For transportation of radiological materials.
        4. Building or Structure from an Existing Foundation (SB) – For transporting large structures.
        5. Single Trip Factory Built Home Permit (SM) – For moving factory-built homes.

      Weight Limitation:

        • Steering Axle: Maximum of 20,000 lbs.
        • Any Other Axle: Maximum of 35,000 lbs.
        • Additional weight limitations may apply depending on the route.

      Length and Size Limits:

        • Length:
          • Single vehicle: Maximum of 50 feet.
          • Mobile crane: Maximum of 60 feet.
        • The overall length, width, and height of other loads depend on the load type.
        • Axle Spacing: If the distance between adjacent axles is less than 42 inches, the axle can only carry the weight of a single axle.

      Maximum Sizes for Single Trip Permits:

        • Overall Length: Maximum of 110 feet.
        • Mobile Home or Modular Only: Maximum of 80 feet.
        • Overall Width: Width limitations will vary based on the specific route taken.

      Steps for Calculating Fees:

      1. No correction fees: If the issuing authority makes an error, no fee will be charged to correct it.
      2. Application transmission costs: Fees for transmitting an application or permit (excluding U.S. mail) are the applicant’s responsibility and are in addition to the permit fee.
      3. Government exemptions: State departments, municipalities, and the U.S. Armed Services are exempt from paying oversize/overweight permit fees.
      4. Route review fee: A $10.00 per district fee applies when the vehicle/load’s size or weight requires a regional highway office to review the route.
      5. Highway structure review fee: A $10.00 fee will be charged when a review of specific highway structures is needed due to the vehicle’s gross weight.
      6. Legal authority: Permit fees are governed by Wisconsin Statutes (s.348.25) and Wisconsin Administrative Code Trans. 250.

        • 0 – 90,000 lbs: $20.00

        • 100,001 – 110,000 lbs: $45.00
        • 110,001 – 120,000 lbs: $55.00
        • 120,001 – 130,000 lbs: $65.00
        • 130,001 – 140,000 lbs: $75.00
        • 140,001 – 150,000 lbs: $85.00
        • Over 150,000 lbs: $85.00 + $10.00 for each additional 10,000 lbs (or part thereof)

      Wisconsin Manufactured Houses and Mobile Homes Permits:

      Single Trip Permit:

        • Applicable for moving buildings (houses, garages, etc.) that exceed 12 ft. wide, 14 ft. 3 in. high, or 100 ft. long.
        • The permit is valid for 5 days and allows one trip.
        • A return trip is permitted at no additional charge if requested with the original application.
        • Routes must be specified, and requests can be made up to 5 days in advance.

      Multiple Trip Permit:

        • Allows for moving structures over a specified size:
          • Width: 15 ft. at the box, 16 ft. at the roof
          • Height: 15 ft.
          • Single vehicle length: 80 ft.
          • Combination vehicle length: 100 ft.
        • Valid for 3 to 12 months.
