New Mexico State Permit Resource

Staying current with state permits is crucial for truckers to ensure legal compliance and avoid costly fines or delays. These permits help streamline operations, ensuring that truckers can transport goods smoothly across state lines without regulatory issues.

Special Fuel Permit

    • Fee: $5.00
    • Valid for 48 hours or for one entry and exit from the state.
    • Required if the driver does not present a valid IFTA Decal or License and the vehicle is powered by special fuel.

Special Fuel Tax

    • If no valid IFTA Decal and Tax Identification Permit are presented, a tax of $0.05 per mile will be assessed based on miles driven in New Mexico.

    Trip Tax

      • Assessed if the driver lacks a valid Weight Distance Permit. Based on vehicle weight and miles traveled:
        • 12,001 to 26,000 lbs: $0.07 per mile
        • 26,001 to 54,000 lbs: $0.12 per mile
        • 54,001 to 72,000 lbs: $0.15 per mile
        • 72,001 lbs and above: $0.16 per mile

    Oversize/Overweight Permit Fees

      • Single Trip Oversize Permit: $25.00
      • Single Trip Overweight Permit: $25.00
      • For loads exceeding 86,400 lbs: an additional fee of $0.025 per ton/mile.

    Multiple Trip Permit

      • For combination vehicles not exceeding:
        • 140,000 lbs
        • 14 feet in width
        • 15 feet in height
        • 120 feet in length
        • 15 feet front overhang
        • 25 feet rear overhang
      • Fee: $250.00
      • Valid for up to one year, based on the certificate of liability insurance.
      • Vehicles exceeding 170,000 lbs require a special permit and an engineering review.

    New Mexico Manufactured Houses and Mobile Homes

      • Single Trip Permit Fee: $25.00
      • Additional fee of $0.025 per 2,000 lbs over 86,400 lbs, multiplied by miles traveled.
      • Permits must be carried in the vehicle and shown to law enforcement upon request.
      • Maximum Limits for manufactured homes:
        • Width cannot exceed 18 feet.
        • Roof overhangs are limited to 6 inches on the left side and 12 inches on the right side beyond the 18-foot width.
