Legal Size and Weight Limits in Kentucky

In Kentucky, permits are required for vehicles exceeding the following legal dimensions and weight limits:

Legal Dimensions:

    • Width: 8 feet 6 inches
    • Height: 13 feet 6 inches
    • Length (single vehicle): 45 feet
    • Length (combination vehicle): 65 feet

Legal Weight:

    • Single Axle: 20,000 pounds
    • Tandem Axle: 34,000 pounds
    • Gross Vehicle Weight: 80,000 pounds (for vehicles with 5 or more axles)

Kentucky Oversize/Overweight Permits

Kentucky issues several types of permits for vehicles that exceed legal dimensions or weight limits:

    1. Non-divisible Annual Permit:
      Required for vehicles or loads of Maximum dimensions: Width 13-11, Length 120-00, Height 13-06, Weight 160,000 Lbs.
        • Cost: $250
    2. Non-divisible Annual Permit::
      Required for vehicles or loads of Maximum dimensions: Width 16-00, Length 120-00, Height 13-06, Weight 160,000  Lbs.
        • Cost: $500

Manufactured and Mobile Home Permits

Kentucky requires special permits for the movement of manufactured and mobile homes that exceed the state’s legal dimensions.

    • Dimensions:
      • Width: Up to 16 feet
      • Length: Up to 120 feet, including the towing vehicle
      • Height: Up to 15 feet
      • Weight: 160,000lbs

Permit Fees:

    • Annual Permit: $1500
    • Homes exceeding 16 feet in width may require additional approvals and fees. Special route planning is often necessary.

Kentucky Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permits

For vehicles operating temporarily in Kentucky, the following permits are required:

    1. 10-Day Trip Permit:
      Any carrier with a vehicle that is over 59,999 lbs. traveling in Kentucky is subject to the KYU tax. In lieu of the KYU tax we offer a 10-day vehicle specific KYU permit.
        • Cost: $40
    2. 10-Day KIT Fuel Permit:
      Carriers that are classified as intrastate Kentucky based carriers with vehicles over 26, 001 lbs. or with 3 or more axles are subject to the KIT fuel tax.
        • Cost: $40
    3. Non-Reciprocal (IRP) Temporary Permit:
      Carriers that are not apportioned through the International Registration Plan (IRP) from their base state are required to purchase a temporary non-reciprocal permit (IRP). There are two permits based on registered weight.
        • Cost: $25 If the registered weight is <= 55,000 lbs.
        • Cost: $40 If the registered weight is > 55,000 lbs.
