Idaho State Permit Resource

Staying current with state permits is crucial for truckers to ensure legal compliance and avoid costly fines or delays. These permits help streamline operations, ensuring that truckers can transport goods smoothly across state lines without regulatory issues.

General Weight Requirements and Conditions

In Idaho, permits are required for vehicles with loads exceeding 80,000 pounds gross weight. Vehicles operating on interstate and national network highways can apply for permits, allowing them to exceed the legal weight limits but must adhere to certain axle weight limits.

Axle Weight Limits:

    • Single Axle: 20,000 pounds
    • Tandem Axle: 34,000 pounds
    • Tridem Axle: 42,000 pounds
    • Max Gross Weight: 80,000 pounds

Idaho Annual Permits

Annual permits are available for indivisible loads traveling on specified highways, including those designated for alternative energy construction sites. Vehicles with an annual permit can weigh up to 256,000 pounds gross vehicle weight but must still comply with the single axle limit of 20,000 pounds.

Annual Permit Dimensions:

    • Width: Up to 16 feet
    • Height: Up to 15 feet 6 inches
    • Length: Up to 110 feet, including load overhang

Cost:

    • Overweight/Oversize (Non-reducible) Annual Permit: $128 for 12 months, with quarterly mileage reports required.
    • Oversize Annual Permit: $43

Idaho Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permits

A 120-hour fuel permit is available either as a standalone permit or in conjunction with a 120-hour registration permit for interstate carriers who do not have an active IFTA license.

Permit Fees:

    • Fuel Permit: $60 per permit
    • 120-Hour Temporary Registration Permit:
      • If the power unit is registered in Idaho and the trailer is registered in Idaho or another state: No fee.
      • If the power unit is not registered for Idaho, there is a $60 fee.
      • If hauling “piggyback” (one truck towing another): $60 fee.

Manufactured Houses and Mobile Homes

Special permits are required to move manufactured homes and mobile homes to Idaho. The following are the legal limits for mobile homes:

    • Length: 80 feet, including the tongue.
    • Width: Up to 16 feet at the base, not exceeding 18 feet overall, including eaves.
