What Qualifies as an “Oversized Load” in Alabama?
- Width: 8 feet on roads less than 12 feet wide and 8 feet 6 inches on roads 12 feet wide or more
- Height: 13 feet 6 inches
- Length: 40 feet for a single vehicle and 57 feet for a truck with a semi-trailer
- Legal Overhang: 5 feet at both the front and rear
What Qualifies as an “Overweight Load” in Alabama?
- Axle Load: 20,000 pounds per axle
- Tandem Axle: 34,000 pounds
- Steering Axle: 20,000 pounds
- Gross Weight: Up to 80,000 pounds

Alabama Annual Permit
Annual or single trip permits do not allow operation if:
- The total weight surpasses 150,000 pounds, or
- Weights exceeding 100,000 pounds require advanced route approval from the department.
Annual permits are valid for one year and are specific to the vehicle, with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the permit matching the transporting vehicle. These permits allow the following dimensions:- Maximum Weight: 150,000 pounds
- Maximum Width: 12 feet
- Maximum Length: 75 feet
- Maximum Height: 14 feet
- Maximum Single Axle Weight: 22,000 pounds
- Cost: $100
Alabama Single Trip Permit
Vehicles using a single trip permit have five days to complete their journey, including a round trip (either loaded from origin to destination and back empty or the reverse). Extensions are not permitted unless the trip is delayed by natural events (floods, snowstorms, etc.) affecting traffic flow in the area.
Weight Fees:
- 80,001 to 100,000 pounds: $10
- 100,001 to 125,000 pounds: $30
- 125,001 to 150,000 pounds: $60
- Over 150,001 pounds: $100
- Please note that if the vehicle exceeds the legal size limits, an additional $10 fee applies.
Operating Hours:
Travel is allowed from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. Travel is prohibited on Sundays and the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Alabama Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permit
For vehicles that need International Registration Plan (IRP) and International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) permits:
- Vehicles that must follow IRP and IFTA rules must acquire an IFTA fuel license, decal, IRP license plate, and cab card for interstate operation. Alternatively, a 7-day IFTA fuel permit or IRP trip permit may be used.
- Applicable to vehicles weighing 26,000 pounds or more or with three axles on the power unit.
Cost:
- 7-day IFTA fuel permit: $20
- 7-day IRP trip permit: $20
- Combined 7-day trip and fuel permit: $40
All permits are valid for 7 days and must be obtained before entering Alabama.
