Oregon State Permit Resource

Staying current with state permits is crucial for truckers to ensure legal compliance and avoid costly fines or delays. These permits help streamline operations, ensuring that truckers can transport goods smoothly across state lines without regulatory issues.

Legal and Maximum Weights

    • Legal Gross Weight: Maximum of 80,000 lbs.

Single Axle:

    • Max of 20,000 lbs, subject to:
      • 600 lbs per inch of tire width.
      • Tire manufacturer’s sidewall rating.

Tandem Axle:

    • Max of 34,000 lbs, subject to:
      • 600 lbs per inch of total tire width.
      • Tire manufacturer’s sidewall rating.

Vehicle or Combination of Vehicles:

    • Max of 80,000 lbs, subject to:
      • Group axle weights (shown in Weight Table 1, form 8110).
      • 20,000 lbs per single axle.
      • 34,000 lbs per tandem axle.

Exceptions to Weight Limits

    1. Two Tandem Axles:
        • If spaced 30+ feet apart, both can weigh 34,000 lbs without a permit on non-Interstate highways (36+ feet on Interstates).
    2. Four Axles (Tandem + Two):
        • If spaced 9+ feet apart and the distance between the first and fourth axle is 35+ feet, the vehicle can weigh 70,000 lbs.
    3. Idle Reduction System:
        • An additional 550 lbs for fully functional idle reduction systems (APU).
    4. CNG/Electric Vehicles:
        • An additional 2,000 lbs for vehicles using natural gas (CNG) or electric batteries as a fuel source.

Note for Exceptions:

    • A vehicle equipped with CNG or electric battery AND an APU can carry an additional 2,550 lbs.
    • Max legal weight with permits: 105,500 lbs, with necessary declarations.

Heavy Motor Vehicle Trip Permit

    • Cost: $43
    • Duration: 10 days

Required if:

    • The vehicle’s gross weight exceeds 26,000 lbs or has 3 or more axles.
    • The vehicle is unregistered (expired or no plates).
    • Oregon is not listed on the registration card.

Heavy Trailer Trip Permit

    • Cost: $10
    • Duration: 10 days

Required for trailers not yet registered, including:

    • Trailers over 8,000 lbs loaded weight.
    • Fixed-load trailers.
    • Special-use trailers.

Temporary Weight-Mile Tax Pass

    • Required for vehicles over 26,000 lbs combined weight (truck, trailer, and load).
    • Must pay the weight-mile tax upfront.
    • A maximum of 5 or more permits can be issued for a single unit, or 35 in 12 months for one account.
    • Cost: $9 plus weight-mile tax per mile.
    • Duration: 10 days
