Vehicles or loads exceeding the following legal dimensions require an oversize permit:

- Height: 13 feet 6 inches
- Length: 65 feet overall
- Legal Overhang: 4 feet in front, 10 feet in the rear
What is Considered an “Overweight Load” in Illinois?
Vehicles or loads exceeding the following weight limits require an overweight permit:

- Single Axle: 20,000 pounds
- Tandem Axle: 34,000 pounds
- Tridem Axle: 42,500 pounds
- Gross Weight: 80,000 pounds
Illinois Annual Permits
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) issues special permits for vehicles carrying non-divisible loads that cannot be reasonably dismantled. These permits may be single-trip or annual permits and indicate the specific routes the vehicle may travel on.
Permitted vehicles are allowed a scale tolerance of:

- Up to 2,000 pounds for a single axle
- Up to 3,000 pounds for a tandem axle
- Up to 5,000 pounds for gross weight above the permitted limits
The department also has the discretion to issue permits for loads that would not ordinarily qualify if there is an urgent need. This includes loads like livestock, hazardous materials, or hot asphalt.

Illinois Manufactured Houses and Mobile Homes
Special permits are required to move manufactured homes or mobile homes. The following guidelines apply:
Towing Vehicles:

- 8 feet wide homes may be towed by a passenger car.
- Homes up to 10 feet wide and 70 feet long may be towed by a ¾ ton truck.
- Homes up to 12 feet wide and 115 feet long must be towed by a 1-ton truck with dual wheels.
- Homes over 12 feet wide and 115 feet long require a 2-ton truck with dual wheels.
Maximum Size:

- Width: 16 feet
- Length: 115 feet, including the towing vehicle
Illinois Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permits
Illinois offers 72-hour permits for vehicles operating temporarily in the state. These permits are vehicle-specific and valid for three days. A maximum of three trip permits can be issued per vehicle within a 12-month period before the vehicle must obtain an IRP license.
Permits are required for:

- Vehicles operating in two or more jurisdictions
- Power units with a licensed weight of 26,001 pounds or more
- Vehicles with more than two axles, regardless of licensed weight
- Combination vehicles with a gross weight of 26,001 pounds or more
A Single Trip Fuel Permit allows vehicles to travel in Illinois for 96 hours without needing to be registered under a motor fuel use tax program.
