Washington State Permit Resource

Staying current with state permits is crucial for truckers to ensure legal compliance and avoid costly fines or delays. These permits help streamline operations, ensuring that truckers can transport goods smoothly across state lines without regulatory issues.

Washington Permits

Maximum Legal Weight Allowed:

    • Single Axle: 20,000 lbs.
    • Tandem Axle: 34,000 lbs.
    • Two Tire Axle: 500 lbs. per inch of tire width.
    • Steer Axle: 600 lbs. per inch of tire width.
    • Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW): 105,500 lbs.

Maximum Permit Weight Allowed:

    • Permits are issued for loads that cannot reasonably be reduced if the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) determines that the roads and structures can support the weight.
    • Single Axle: Up to 22,000 lbs.
    • Tandem Axle: Up to 43,000 lbs.
    • 600 lbs. per inch of tire width.

Weight Calculation Formula:

To determine the weight allowed for any axle group, use the following:

    • 7 to less than 10 feet between axles: Multiply distance in feet by 6,500 lbs.
    • 10 to less than 30 feet between axles: (Feet + 20) x 2,200 lbs.
    • 30 feet or more between axles: (Feet + 40) x 1,600 lbs.

Bridge Restrictions: Some highways may limit single axle capacities to 21,500 lbs. or less.

Over Axle Permit (Overweight):

    • Issued when a load exceeds legal axle weight limits (over 20,000 lbs. on a single axle or 34,000 lbs. on tandem axles). The tridem weight depends on axle spacing, and the permit price is based on the weight over legal limits and the number of miles traveled.
