Texas State Permit Resource

Staying current with state permits is crucial for truckers to ensure legal compliance and avoid costly fines or delays. These permits help streamline operations, ensuring that truckers can transport goods smoothly across state lines without regulatory issues.

Maximum Permit Weight Allowed:

    • The maximum permit weight for any axle group is based on 650 pounds per inch of tire width or the following weight limits:
      • Single Axle: 25,000 lbs
      • Tandem Axle (Two Axles): 46,000 lbs
      • Tridem Axle (Three Axles): 60,000 lbs
      • Quadrum Axle (Four Axles): 70,000 lbs
      • Quint Axle (Five Axles): 81,400 lbs
      • Six or More Axles: Requires an engineering study of the equipment and measurements.

Texas Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permits:

Fuel Permit:

    • Fee: $50 for a fuel trip permit. This is for carriers not using the IFTA license for consolidated fuel tax reporting.

Trip Permit:

    • 72-Hour Permit: $25
    • 144-Hour Permit: $50
    • Non-refundable processing fee of $4.75 applies to each permit.

Texas Annual Permits:

    • Maximum Limits:
      • Length: 125 feet
      • Overhang: 30 feet
      • Width: 20 feet

Costs:

    • Annual Envelope Permit (company or vehicle-specific): $4,000
    • Trip Fee (varies by number of counties chosen for travel):
      • 1-5 counties: $270 total
      • 6-20 counties: $345 total
      • 21-40 counties: $545 total
      • 41-60 counties: $720 total
      • 61-80 counties: $895 total
      • 81-100 counties: $995 total
      • 101-254 counties: $1,095 total

Texas Manufactured Homes and Mobile Homes Permits:

Single-Trip Permit:

    • Issued for manufactured housing or buildings exceeding legal size limits when transported on a returnable undercarriage or temporary chassis.
    • Valid for one movement (not to exceed 5 days).
    • Holiday Restrictions: Transport is not allowed on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
    • For double-wide manufactured houses, each half requires its own permit, or if moved as one unit on house-moving dollies, a separate permit is required.

Annual Permit:

    • Applicable for the transport of a manufactured house from the manufacturing facility to a temporary storage location (not to exceed 20 miles from the point of manufacture).
    • Fee: $1,500
