South Dakota State Permit Resource

Staying current with state permits is crucial for truckers to ensure legal compliance and avoid costly fines or delays. These permits help streamline operations, ensuring that truckers can transport goods smoothly across state lines without regulatory issues.

Maximum Permit Weight Allowed:

    • Axle Weight Limits:
      • 2 axles: 40,000 lbs
      • 3 axles: 60,000 lbs
      • 4 axles: 80,000 lbs
      • 5 axles: 85,000 lbs
      • 6 axles: 90,000 lbs
      • 7 or more axles: 95,000 lbs

An additional overweight fee of 2 cents per ton-mile applies for weight beyond these limits.

Permit Types:

Single-Trip Oversize/Overweight Permit: 

Required for vehicles exceeding 80,000 lbs GVW on Interstate highways.

    • Required for movement of vehicles over the legal weight/size limits.
    • Fee: $25 for single-trip overweight permits.

Over 80,000 Pounds on Interstate Permit:

    • Allows exceeding 80,000 lbs GVW on Interstate highways.
    • Fee: $60 for annual permits
    • Fee: $25 for single-trip.

Oversize Permit (Non-divisible Loads):

    • Extended Period permit for non-divisible loads up to 14 feet 6 inches wide and 30 feet of total overhang.
    • Fee: $60.

Oversize Trailer Permit:

    • Allows movement of vehicles up to 110 feet long and 10 feet wide.
    • Fee: $60.
  1. Manufactured Home Permit:
      • Extended Period permit for homes up to 16 feet wide, 15 feet high, and 80 feet long.
      • Fee: $60 for annual, $25 for single-trip.

Multiple-Trip Construction Equipment Permit:

    • For moving construction equipment in a base county and surrounding counties.
    • Fee: $5 per county/month or up to $20/month for all counties.

Overlength Semitrailer Permit:

    • For semitrailers between 53 and 60 feet long.
    • Fee: $60 for extended period, $25 for single-trip.

South Dakota Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permits:

  1. Temporary Fuel Permits:
      • Required if IFTA decals or licenses are not displayed.
      • Fee: $20, valid for 72 hours.
  2. Trip Permits:
      • For intrastate travel within South Dakota.
      • Fee: $15 per trip.
