Staying current with state permits is crucial for truckers to ensure legal compliance and avoid costly fines or delays. These permits help streamline operations, ensuring that truckers can transport goods smoothly across state lines without regulatory issues.
Maximum Axle Weight for Multiple Axle Vehicles:

- Single Axle: 22,400 pounds.
- Tandem Axle:
- 32,000 pounds (if axles are less than 6 feet apart).
- 36,000 pounds (if axles are less than 12 feet apart).
- Tridem Axle:
- 40,000 pounds (if axles are less than 16 feet apart).
- 44,000 pounds (if axles are less than 20 feet apart).
- 46,000 pounds (if axles are less than 22 feet apart).
- 50,000 pounds (if axles are less than 27 feet apart).
- Gross Vehicle Weight: Maximum 80,000 pounds.
Maximum Permit Weight for Divisible Load:

- Three or more axle vehicles: 76,650 pounds maximum.
- Three axle tractor semi-trailer: 62,000 pounds maximum.
- Four axle tractor semi-trailer: 87,000 pounds maximum.
- Four or more axle tractor semi-trailer: 104,800 pounds maximum.
When is a Permit Required?
A permit is required when a vehicle exceeds the legal limits defined in Rhode Island General Laws (RIGL) 31-25, including:

- Width greater than 8 ft 6 in.
- Height greater than 13 ft 6 in.
- Single vehicle length over 40 ft.
- Semi-trailer length greater than 48.5 ft (depending on the route, up to 53 ft).
- Front overhang over 3 ft.
- Rear overhang over 6 ft.
- Single axle weight over 22,400 lbs.
- Tandem axle weight over 36,000 lbs.
Non-Divisible Permits:

- For non-divisible construction equipment (excavators, backhoes, etc.).
- Not for construction materials.
- Valid for 1 year from purchase.
Trip Fee: $20 for non-divisible vehicles or loads.
Blanket Fee: $100 for intrastate movements, in lieu of paying individual trip fees.
Divisible Load Permits:

- Rhode Island Registered Vehicles: Fees are reflected in the registration fee.
- Out-of-State Registered Vehicles:
- Trailers: $30 flat fee.
- Two- to four-axle trucks: $10 per 1,000 pounds over the legal limit (maximum $300 for 76,650 pounds).
- Tractors: $10 per 1,000 pounds over the legal limit (up to $250 for 104,800 pounds).
- Transfer fee: $10.
- Permits expire on March 31, fees are not prorated.
Rhode Island Trip and Fuel (IRP / IFTA) Permits:

- Temporary Fuel Permit: Motor Carriers operating qualifying motor vehicles and do not wish to participate in the IFTA program must obtain a trip permit to travel through IFTA member jurisdictions, as per the laws and regulations of each jurisdiction.
- Valid for 5 days
- Cost: $50
