Staying current with state permits is crucial for truckers to ensure legal compliance and avoid costly fines or delays. These permits help streamline operations, ensuring that truckers can transport goods smoothly across state lines without regulatory issues.

Oklahoma Overweight and Oversize Load Regulations

Overweight Permits

    • Permits are for single trips only.
    • The load must be non-divisible and necessary for a public emergency, with concurrence from the Commissioner of Public Safety.
    • The route must be the shortest available.
    • Axle loading must not exceed 20,000 lbs per axle or 600 lbs per inch of tire tread width, whichever is lesser.

    Permits Required

      • For vehicles exceeding 80,000 lbs on interstates or 90,000 lbs on other highways, permits are necessary.
      • Longer Combination Vehicles (LCV) can operate up to 90,000 lbs on interstates if they were in operation before June 1, 1991, and have a special annual divisible load permit.

    Oversize Permits

      • Single-trip permits are standard, but multi-trip permits may be issued for industries near state borders or under special conditions.
      • The load must be non-divisible and not exceed 16 feet in width on interstates.
      • Vehicle height must clear overpasses by at least 2 inches based on Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s clearance maps.
      • Vehicles must stay on the road surface and not require the use of shoulders or exceed the turning radius of the roadway.

    Semitrailer Lengths

      • Semitrailers up to 53 feet may operate without a permit on designated highways.
      • Combinations of semitrailers and trailers must not exceed 110 feet in total length or 29 feet per trailer.
      • The heaviest trailer must be placed in front, and an empty trailer cannot precede a loaded one.

    Annual Envelope Vehicle Permit

      • Issued for non-divisible oversize or overweight loads.
      • Overhang limits: 25 feet (front) and 30 feet (rear).
      • Cost: $4,000 annually.
      • Permits are valid only on state highways.

    Dimensions allowed:

      • Width: 12 feet
      • Height: 14 feet
      • Length: 110 feet
      • GVW: 120,000 lbs

    Oklahoma Annual Permits

      • Overweight Non-Divisible Loads: GVW up to 120,000 lbs.
      • Permits can be transferable or non-transferable.

    Dimensions:

      • Length: No set maximum
      • Width: 16 feet
      • Height: Route dependent

    Cost:

      • Special Purpose Annual Oversize: $10
      • Overweight: $60

    Oklahoma Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permits

      • 72-hour Commercial Vehicle Registration Trip Permit allows short-term legal registration for unregistered commercial vehicles or trailers.
      • Cost: $12. Valid for 72 hours.
