Staying current with state permits is crucial for truckers to ensure legal compliance and avoid costly fines or delays. These permits help streamline operations, ensuring that truckers can transport goods smoothly across state lines without regulatory issues.

Ohio Oversized and Overweight Load Regulations

Weight Limitations

For vehicles with pneumatic tires traveling on non-interstate roads:

  1. Single Axle: 20,000 lbs.
  2. Two Successive Axles:
      • Spaced ≤ 4 feet apart: 24,000 lbs.
      • Spaced > 4 feet apart: 34,000 lbs., plus 1,000 lbs. per foot over 4 feet, up to a max of 40,000 lbs.
  3. Three Successive Axles (Load Bearing):
      • Total weight: 48,000 lbs.
      • If part of a 6-axle vehicle with at least 20 feet between the front and rearmost axles, 42,500 lbs. Total weight capped at 54,000 lbs., with 600 lbs. added for every foot of spacing.
  4. Vehicle and Load Combination: Not to exceed 38,000 lbs., with 900 lbs. added per foot of spacing.
  5. Max Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW): 80,000 lbs.

    Maximum Permit Weight Guidelines

      • Single Axle: 29,000 lbs.
      • Short Tandem Axle: 36,000 lbs.
      • Long Tandem Axle: 50,000 lbs. (minimum 4’1″ spacing required)
      • Short Tri Axle: 47,000 lbs.
      • Short Quad Axle or Long Tri Axle: 60,000 lbs.
      • Long Quad Axle: 80,000 lbs.

    Routine Permits

      • Oversize (OS) Only: $135 per trip; $65 for each added destination.
      • Oversize/Overweight (OS/OW): $145 per trip; $135 for each added destination. Additional “Ton Mile” (TM) fees apply for loads over 120,000 lbs.
      • Steel/Aluminum Coil: $75 per trip; $65 for each added destination.

    Superload Permits

      • Applies to loads over 120,000 lbs, 14′ wide, or 14’6″ high.
      • Cost: $135 per trip; Ton Mile (TM) fees apply for additional weight over 120,000 lbs.

    Continuing (90-Day) Permits

      • OS Only: $260
      • OS/OW: $510
      • Steel/Aluminum Coil: $135

    Permit Revisions

      • All permits can be revised for $10, except Superload permits, which cost $50 for revisions.

    Ohio Annual Permits

      • Cost Range: $970 to $2,970 (valid for 1 year).
      • Limits: Max weight: 140,000 lbs., Width: 14′, Height: 14’6″.

    Ohio Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permits

      • Temporary trip and fuel permits can be purchased by companies not registered for IRP/IFTA for $12/day. This allows for temporary operation within or passage through Ohio.
