North Dakota Oversized and Overweight Load Regulations

Oversized Load

    • Width:
      • 8′ 6″ on interstate highways
      • 8′ on other roads
    • Height: 14′
    • Length:
      • Semi-trailer: 53′
      • Combination vehicles: 75′
    • Legal Overhang:
      • Front and Rear: 10′

    Overweight Load

      • Single Axle: 20,000 lbs.
      • Tandem Axle: 34,000 lbs.
      • Tridem Axle: 48,000 lbs.
      • Max Legal Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW): 80,000 lbs. on most highways
        • 105,500 lbs. on state highways unless posted otherwise

    Maximum Permit Weights:

      • Single Axle: 22,000 lbs.
      • Tandem Axle: 40,000 lbs.
      • Gross Vehicle Weight: 150,000 lbs.
        • 600 lbs. per inch of tire width for steering axles on specific road systems.

    North Dakota Annual Permits

      • Dimensions:
        • Length: 120′
        • Width: 18′
        • Height: 18′
        • Gross Weight: Up to 150,000 lbs. for non-divisible loads (subject to route-specific review)
      • Cost: $50 (annual permit)

    North Dakota Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permits

    Fuel Permit

      • Cost: $15 for 72 hours or until vehicle leaves the state.
      • Required for non-resident carriers without IFTA licenses operating in North Dakota.

    Vehicles Requiring a Fuel Permit:

      • Single-unit vehicles with two axles exceeding 26,000 lbs. GVW
      • Any vehicle with three or more axles, regardless of weight
      • Combination vehicles exceeding 26,000 lbs. GVW

    Exemptions:

      • Vehicles with an IFTA license and cab card
      • Vehicles under 26,000 lbs. GVW
      • North Dakota-based vehicles

    Trip Permit

      • Cost: $20 for a 72-hour permit.
      • Required for non-resident carriers without ND registration or those exceeding their registered gross weight limits.

    Vehicles Requiring a Trip Permit:

      • Two-axle vehicles exceeding 26,000 lbs. GVW
      • Combination vehicles or three-axle power units exceeding 26,000 lbs. GVW

    Exemptions:

      • Tourists
      • Vehicles registered under reciprocity agreements
      • Carriers with valid IRP cab cards listing North Dakota
