Staying current with state permits is crucial for truckers to ensure legal compliance and avoid costly fines or delays. These permits help streamline operations, ensuring that truckers can transport goods smoothly across state lines without regulatory issues.

Michigan Oversize and Overweight Regulations

Oversize Load in Michigan

A vehicle is considered oversize if it exceeds the following legal limits:

    • Width: 8 ft. 6 in. (8 ft. on non-designated highways)
    • Height: 13 ft. 6 in.
    • Length: Truck-Semi-trailer combination – 65 ft.
    • Legal Overhang:
      • Front: 3 ft.
      • Rear: Any length up to the legal maximum vehicle length. If the load extends more than 4 ft. beyond the rear of the vehicle, a 12 ft. red flag is required during the day, and a red light/lantern is required at night.

Overweight Load in Michigan

A vehicle is considered overweight if it exceeds the following legal limits:

    • Single Axle: 20,000 lbs
    • Tandem Axle: 34,000 lbs
    • Max Gross Weight: 80,000 lbs

Single Trip Permits

Dimensions:

    • Max Width: 16 ft.
    • Max Height: 15 ft.
    • Max Length: 150 ft.

Fees:

    • $15 for over-dimension loads that are legal in weight.
    • $50 for loads that are over-dimension and/or overweight.
    • Valid for a five-day period and for a one-way trip. A return trip can be requested within the same five-day period with the same configuration or an empty trailer.

Extended Permits

    • For specific loads moved frequently on state highways, extended renewable permits may be issued.
    • Loads must be owned or operated by the applicant or under a lease/rental agreement.
    • Extended permits are not available for “for hire” carriers.

Fees for Extended Permits:

    • Annual Renewal for Over-Dimension and Legal Weight:
      • $30 for each truck, trailer, or piece of equipment.
    • Annual Renewal for Over-Dimension and Overweight:
      • $100 for each truck, trailer, or equipment.
    • Construction Equipment Annual Renewal:
      • $264 per power unit.

Michigan Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permits

Trip Permits for Michigan Operators Driving Out of State:

    • A trip permit is required to enter any IRP jurisdiction unless the vehicle has apportioned registration with the jurisdiction listed on the cab card.

Trip Permits for Out-of-State Operators in Michigan:

    • A 72-hour reciprocity permit is required for out-of-state vehicles exceeding their maximum GVW in Michigan or not IRP-registered.
    • Fee: $20

Temporary Fuel Permit:

    • Issued in lieu of IFTA licensing for travel within Michigan.
    • Fee: $20 for 5 consecutive days (limit 3 per year).
