Massachusetts Oversize and Overweight Regulations
Overweight Load in Massachusetts
A vehicle is considered overweight if it exceeds the following legal limits:

- Single Axle: 22,400 lbs
- Tandem Axle: 34,000 lbs
- Tridem Axle: 36,000 lbs
- Max Gross Weight: 80,000 lbs
Oversize Load in Massachusetts
A vehicle or load is considered oversize if it exceeds the following dimensions:

- Width: 8 ft. 6 in. (If using tunnels)
- Height: 13 ft. 6 in. (If not using tunnels)
- Length:
- Semi-trailer: 53 ft.
- Trailer in tractor-trailer combination: 53 ft.
- Trailer not in tractor-trailer combination: 33 ft.
- Truck: 40 ft.
Massachusetts Annual Permits
To obtain an annual Oversize/Overweight (OS/OW) permit, vehicles must adhere to the following maximum dimensions:

- Width: Up to 14 ft.
- Height: Up to 14 ft. (Over 13’ 8” requires a height survey)
- Length: Up to 115 ft.
- Cost: $400
- Validity: 1 year
Massachusetts Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permits
Temporary IFTA Permit:

- Valid for 30 days while awaiting the annual decal.
- Only issued to current IFTA carriers.
Single Trip IFTA Permit:
-
- Valid for 72 hours.
- Cost: $20
- Can be used instead of registering in the state IFTA program.
Temporary Trip Permit (IRP):
-
- Valid for 72 hours.
- Cost: $15
- Can be used instead of registering for IRP plates.
Manufactured Homes Regulations in Massachusetts
Height Restrictions:
-
- Sectional, mobile, or modular homes exceeding 13’6″ in total height or 100′ in total length will not be granted permits for state highways.
Width Restrictions:
-
- Homes between 12′ and 14′ wide may only travel under permit during daylight hours, Monday through Friday.
- No travel permitted between 7:00 – 9:00 A.M. and 3:30 – 7:00 P.M.
- Maximum width allowed is 16′, but the routes are limited to accommodate this width.

- Single Trip: $40
- Annual Overweight Permit for construction vehicles only: $400
