Oversized Load in Maryland
A vehicle is considered “oversized” in Maryland if it exceeds the following legal dimensions:

- Length:
- Semi-trailer: 53′
- Overall length: 74′ (Indivisible loads up to 70′ can be moved without a permit during daylight hours.)
- Legal Overhang:
- Front: 3′
- Rear: 6′ (Flags and lamps required for overhangs beyond 4′ at the rear.)
Overweight Load in Maryland
A vehicle is classified as “overweight” if it exceeds the following weight limits:

- Single Axle: 20,000 lbs
- Tandem Axle: 34,000 lbs
- Tridem Axle: 42,500 lbs
- Max Gross Weight: 80,000 lbs
Special Hauling Permit

- Purpose: Issued for a specific load or vehicle.
- Validity: Single trip, one-way.
- Duration: Valid for 5 days (or 10 days for a return trip, with double the fee).
Fee Structure:

- Additional $5 per ton for loads exceeding the legal weight.
Book Permit

- Details:
- Contains 10 permits per book.
- Cost: $300 per book ($30 per permit).
- Each permit must be activated by calling the Hauling Permits Unit (HPU).
- Load Limitations:
- Length: Max 85′
- Width: Max 13′
- Height: Max 15′
- Gross Weight: Max 90,000 lbs (45 tons).
- Validity: Book permits are valid for 2 years from the date of purchase.

Blanket Permit

- Yearly Fee: $500
- Conditions:
- A multi-page document with route restrictions, holiday guidelines, and application.
- Original permit must be in the vehicle during transit.
- Registration Requirements:
- Truck-tractor and semi-trailer must be registered in Maryland.
- Special mobile equipment must display a Maryland Special Mobile Equipment Plate.
- Load Limitations:
- Length: Max 75′
- Width: Max 12′
- Height: Max 14′
- Gross Weight: Max 80,000 lbs (40 tons).
Continuous Travel Permit

- 24/7 travel allowed.

- Original permit must be carried in the vehicle.

Maryland Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permits

- Out-of-state operators must obtain a 72-Hour Trip Permit before entering Maryland.
- Permits can be purchased through vendors or directly from the Motor Vehicle Administration via mail, fax, or in person.
