Louisiana Oversize/Overweight Permits

Oversize Load Criteria in Louisiana

    • Width: 8’6″
    • Height: 14′
    • Length: 65′ for any vehicle or combination
    • Overhang: 4′ front, 8′ rear

Overweight Load Criteria in Louisiana

    • Axle Weight:
      • Single axle: 20,000 lbs
      • Tandem axle: 34,000 lbs
      • Tridem axle: 42,000 lbs
      • Quadrum axle: 50,000 lbs
      • Gross Vehicle Weight: 80,000 lbs, or 88,000 lbs for quadrum axles (limited to 83,400 lbs on interstates)

Louisiana Annual Permits

 Dimensions:

    • Height: 14’4″
    • Width: 12′
    • Length: 90′
    • Overhang: 25′
    • Gross Vehicle Weight: 80,000 lbs
    • Permit Validity: 1 year, non-transferable, non-refundable, valid only for the pulling unit (VIN specific)
    • Prohibitions: No crossing bridges with posted weight limits or traveling in restricted construction zones
    • Special Conditions: Loads exceeding 108,000 lbs must have at least six axles; vertical clearance is the permit holder’s responsibility
    • Processing Time: 1 business day

Cost:

    • Oversize: $500 annually
    • Oversize and Overweight (OS/OW): $2,500 annually

Louisiana Manufactured Houses and Mobile Homes

    • Annual Permits: Not allowed
    • Oversize Permits: $10 per day/trip for loads exceeding legal dimensions
      • Exception: Overlength-only vehicles hauling the same product may make multiple trips per day, but mobile homes are limited to one trip per day.
      • 72-Hour Permit: Issued for oversize mobile homes (non-overweight), valid for 72 consecutive hours, no extensions.

Louisiana Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permits

    • Requirements: Vehicles registered in other states must either provide proof of payment to Louisiana or obtain a 48-hour temporary trip permit to operate on Louisiana highways.
    • Eligibility: Trucks registered in other states without apportioned license plates showing Louisiana must obtain the 48-hour trip permit.
    • Cost: $50, payable by certified funds or cash (if paying in person)
    • Issuing Agencies: Louisiana State Police, DPS Weight Enforcement Division, or Office of Motor Vehicles.
