Georgia State Permit Resource

Staying current with state permits is crucial for truckers to ensure legal compliance and avoid costly fines or delays. These permits help streamline operations, ensuring that truckers can transport goods smoothly across state lines without regulatory issues.

Single-Trip Permits

A single-trip permit in Georgia is required for oversized or overweight vehicles traveling within the state. These permits are valid for one-time use and are limited to the dates and routes specified on the permit. The permit must include a detailed description of the load, transporter name, and the route of travel.

Permit Fees:

    • Standard Single-Trip Permit: $30.00
      • Width/height limit: 16 feet
      • Weight limit: 150,000 pounds
    • Superload Single-Trip Permit: $125.00
      • Width/height exceeding 16 feet
      • Weight limit: 150,001 to 180,000 pounds
      • Approval may take up to three days.
    • Superload Plus Permit: $500.00
      • For vehicles weighing over 180,000 pounds and requiring a bridge analysis.
      • Approval may take up to three weeks.
    • Mega Load Permit: $500.00
      • For vehicles weighing 300,000 pounds and above, requiring an external engineering review.
      • Please allow at least 30 business days for the the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to review and coordinate the move.

Annual Permits

Annual permits are issued for loads that exceed legal dimensions but are within the limits set for each specific load type. These permits are valid for one year from the date of purchase and allow for multiple trips. Permits are also interchangeable between vehicles within the same company if the original permit is in the transport vehicle.

Permit Fees:

    • Standard Annual Permit: $150.00
      • Width limit: 12 feet
      • Height limit: 14 feet 6 inches
      • Weight limit: 100,000 pounds
      • Length limit: 100 feet
    • NHS (National Highway System) Annual Permit: $500.00
      • Width limit: 14 feet (allowed up to 14 feet 8 inches from the base to 10 feet above the ground for the upper portion of the load).
      • Height limit: 14 feet 6 inches
      • Weight limit: 100,000 pounds
      • Length limit: 100 feet
      • Limited to NHS routes only.

Annual Commercial Wrecker Emergency Tow Permit

Effective July 1, 2013, Georgia introduced the Annual Commercial Wrecker Emergency Tow Permit, replacing older versions. This permit allows wrecker services to tow disabled, damaged, or abandoned commercial vehicles, even if the wrecker and its load exceed maximum legal limits.

    • Permit Limitations:
      • Maximum single axle weight: 25,000 pounds
      • Maximum tandem axle load: 50,000 pounds (38,000 pounds for secondary tandem axle).
      • Maximum load length: 125 feet

Permit Fees:
$500.00 per permit.

Special Permit Limits

For vehicles that exceed standard dimensions, the following limits apply:

    • Height: 18 feet
    • Length: No set limit
    • Width: 16 feet
    • Weight Limits:
      • 1 axle: 23,000 pounds
      • 2 axles: 46,000 pounds
      • 3 axles: 60,000 pounds
      • 4 axles: 92,000 pounds
      • 5 axles: 100,000 pounds
      • 6 axles: 125,000 pounds
      • 7 axles: 148,000 pounds
      • 8 axles: 150,000 pounds

Divisible loads are not allowed under a special permit. Dozer blades may be transported either attached to or separated from the dozer, with up to 100,000 pounds of gross weight.

Insurance Requirements

Carriers applying for trip permits must provide proof of insurance showing the following:

    • Minimum Coverage:
      • $1 million for bodily injury (multiple persons per incident).
      • $1 million for property damage.
    • The Georgia Department of Public Safety must be listed as the certificate holder on the insurance policy, and it must be on file with the department.
