When is a Connecticut Oversize/Overweight Vehicle Permit Needed?

Connecticut Oversize/Overweight Single Trip Permit
This permit is issued for non-divisible loads and is valid for one trip and return within three days.

- Weekend Travel: Permits for Saturday and Sunday travel are available upon request for loads up to 12 feet wide, 13 feet 6 inches high, 80 feet long, and up to 160,000 pounds.

- Electronic transmittal fee: $12
- An “Engineering Analysis” fee applies to loads exceeding 200,000 pounds, charged at $2 per 1,000 pounds over the 200,000-pound threshold.

Connecticut Divisible Load Permit
Permits for hauling approved bulk materials are available annually or monthly.
- Annual Permits: Charged at $9 per 1,000 pounds or fraction thereof, based on the permitted weight, with an additional $12 electronic transmittal fee. These permits are valid for one year from the effective date.
- Monthly Permits: Cost $100 per calendar month or fraction thereof, with a $12 electronic transmittal fee. Monthly permits are issued on a calendar basis, not in 30-day increments.
Connecticut Annual Indivisible Load Permit
This permit applies to Connecticut-based carriers transporting construction equipment.
- Effective Period: The permit is issued annually from May 1 through April 30.
- Fees: $9 per 1,000 pounds based on the permitted weight, with a $12 electronic transmittal fee. Fees are prorated based on the months remaining in the effective period.
- Route Authorization: A no-fee route authorization for each trip under this permit is required.
Connecticut Radioactive Single Trip Permit
This permit is required for transporting radioactive materials, including:
- Radioactive material is classified as a “large quantity” by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (10 CFR Part 71).
- Radioactive waste is produced as part of the nuclear fuel cycle and shipped to a waste disposal facility.
- Any shipment of radioactive material that requires a placard per 10 CFR or 49 CFR.

Connecticut Super Load Permit
Connecticut considers a vehicle combination to be a super load if it exceeds the following parameters:

- Width: 16 feet
- Height: 16 feet
- Weight: 200,000 pounds

Super load movements are restricted to nighttime travel and require Connecticut State Police (CSP) escorts. For proper coordination, super load applications must be submitted at least five business days in advance.

- Route Survey: A certified route survey must be conducted by a Connecticut-based surveyor within one week before the move. The survey must detail special considerations like tree cover, low lines, and signal removal along the route.
- Encroachment Permits: Required if the move involves manipulating of state property (tree trimming, traffic signal adjustments, etc.). Town or private permissions must also be obtained if needed.
