Arkansas Oversize/Overweight Permit

An Arkansas oversize/overweight permit is required for vehicles that exceed the state’s legal size or weight limits to travel safely on Arkansas highways. Issued by the Arkansas Department of Transportation, this permit specifies approved routes, travel times, and safety requirements like escort vehicles or signage to ensure compliance with state regulations. This permit helps protect roads, bridges, and public safety by regulating heavy or oversized loads on state roads.

 

Maximum Legal Dimensions in Arkansas:

      • Width: 8 feet 6 inches (8 feet for manufactured homes)
      • Height: 14 feet
      • Length: Determined by the trailer’s legal limits
      • Gross Weight: 80,000 pounds on vehicles with 5 or more axles, which must comply with the federal bridge formula

Axle Weight Limits

      • Single Load-Carrying Axle: 20,000 pounds
      • Tandem Axle Group: 34,000 pounds
      • Tri-Axle Group: 50,000 pounds
      • Steer Axle: 12,000 to 20,000 pounds (must match manufacturer’s axle rating)

Arkansas Monthly Permit Charge Account

Arkansas allows a monthly charge account for permits, secured by a surety bond of at least $1,000.

      • Account Management: Account holders receive monthly invoices and are responsible for securing their account numbers, as any permits issued under their account must be paid by the holder.
      • Account Usage: The account may only be used for the holder’s own or leased vehicles, or for commercial permitting services approved by the AHP Permit Section.

Arkansas Use Fuel Permit

This permit applies to diesel-powered vehicles such as road tractors, truck tractors, or passenger-carrying vehicles with a GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds and more than two axles.

  • 0-50 Miles: $16
  • Over 50 Miles: $65

Movement Restrictions

No oversize movement is permitted through the Greater Little Rock area during peak traffic times (7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.) on specified highways:

  • Interstate 30 (mile markers 138-143)
  • Interstate 40 (mile markers 151-155)
  • Interstate 630

Permits may be issued for movements on holidays if obtained in advance.

Arkansas Super Load Permit

Super load permits are available for vehicles with:

  • Gross Weight: 180,000 pounds or more
  • Dimensions: Width of more than 16 feet 6 inches, length of more than 100 feet, or height of more than 15 feet 6 inches

These super loads require special consideration, including possible engineering assessments. Applications should be submitted well in advance to allow for these examinations.

Arkansas Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permit

Temporary trip permits are valid for 72 hours and cost $33. They can be obtained at an entry port or through a permitting service. A non-transferable “hunter” permit is also available for vehicles operating unladen, valid for 30 days at a cost of $39.

Arkansas Manufactured Home Permit

Legal Definitions:

  • Manufactured Home Unit: A structure built for use as a dwelling, office, or classroom, over 8 feet wide or 60 feet long, capable of being transported on highways.
  • Overwidth: Any manufactured home unit exceeding 8 feet in width.

Permit Fees:

  • For manufactured homes exceeding 8 feet but not exceeding 16 feet 6 inches in width, the fee is $17.
  • For homes wider than 16 feet 6 inches, the fee is $150.

Arkansas Hazardous Waste Transportation Permit

To transport hazardous waste in Arkansas, transporters must acquire a permit from the Arkansas Highway Police.

Application Requirements:

  • Proof of liability insurance ($1 million minimum)
  • Full vehicle and equipment details
  • Financial statement and safety program description
  • Non-refundable filing fee: $50

Permits are valid for one year and are non-transferable.
