Alaska State Permit Resource

Staying current with state permits is crucial for truckers to ensure legal compliance and avoid costly fines or delays. These permits help streamline operations, ensuring that truckers can transport goods smoothly across state lines without regulatory issues.

Alaska Oversize/Overweight Permit

What Qualifies as an “Overweight Load” in Alaska?

Any axle less than 8 feet and 1 inch apart from the nearest axle, measured from the center, is part of an axle group. For multi-axle groups, each axle must support at least 6,000 pounds. In a truck-tractor and single semitrailer combination (where the semitrailer is 48 feet or more in length), the three-axle group on the semitrailer must not exceed the following weight limits based on the axle spacing:

  • 3’6″ minimum spacing: 42,000 pounds
  • 5′ minimum spacing: 43,500 pounds
  • 6′ minimum spacing: 45,000 pounds

    Alaska Annual Permit

Annual permits are available for non-reducible loads only, and the following dimensions apply:

The total weight surpasses 150,000 pounds, or

    • Maximum Height: 15 feet
    • Maximum Width: 10 feet 6 inches
    • Maximum Length: 75 feet
    • Maximum Weight: 125% of the legal weight

Loads exceeding these dimensions or weights will require a single-trip permit.

    Annual permit costs:

        • Overweight: The annual permit fee is $500. It allows a maximum weight of up to 125% of the legal axle load. If other dimensions are within legal limits, this permit has no travel restrictions or flag/sign requirements.
        • Overlength: A $450 annual permit for vehicles exceeding standard length limits is available. It allows for a maximum length of 85 feet overall, with a 10-foot rear overhang and a 53-foot trailer. Travel restrictions apply, and oversize signs and red flags are mandatory.
        • Overwidth: An annual permit is available for $500 for widths up to 10 feet 6 inches.

    Alaska Overlength Permit

Vehicles that exceed length limits must have alternating red and white conspicuity tape along at least 50% of each side.

    • For Single Unit Movements: If the vehicle exceeds 53 feet, it must display a “LONG LOAD,” “OVERSIZE,” or “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign on the rear. Vehicles between 65 and 85 feet long must be accompanied by one escort vehicle, and vehicles longer than 85 feet require at least two escorts.
    • For Combination Vehicles: Similar signage applies when the length exceeds 75 feet. Vehicles longer than 100 feet but shorter than 150 feet require two escorts, and vehicles exceeding 150 feet require three escorts.

    Alaska Overheight Permit

Permit holders are responsible for conducting route surveys, identifying the lowest overhead clearances, and physically measuring the load’s dimensions. Additional measures include coordinating with utility companies if utility lines are affected.

    • Height over 16’6″: Must have a front escort vehicle with an over-height pole at least six inches taller than the vehicle/load.
    • Height over 17 feet: Operations are restricted to daylight hours, and the maximum speed on highways is 45 MPH unless otherwise restricted by load dimensions.

Alaska Trip and Fuel (IRP/IFTA) Permit

Commercial vehicles operating in multiple jurisdictions but not registered under a prorating agreement must pay total registration fees.

    • Dual Registration: Required for Canadian-owned vehicles operating between Alaska and Canada. The necessary documentation includes proof of registration, a USDOT number, and payment of heavy vehicle use tax (HVUT).

Alaska Trip and Fuel Permit Fees

    • Trip Permit for Trucks, Vans, Truck Tractors, or Commercial Buses: $350
    • Other Commercial Vehicles (including trailers or semitrailers): $10
